Ever since the release of Star Wars in 1977, fans have been dreaming about living in that galaxy far, far away. While that may be just a little difficult, there are still the real-world locations that served as various worlds during filming, and they can be visited. In Galactic Backpacking, we explore these locations by country, looking at their histories and current attractions. In this installment of Galactic Backpacking, we take a look at Guatemala, the country that was used in A New Hope for the scenes of Yavin 4, as well as for Kashyyyk in the infamous Holiday Special. • Princess Leia and the Gold Metal Bikini: The Pop Culture Connections

    Brad Ricca
    18 Sep 2014 | 12:30 pm
The thing about Princess Leia’s gold metal bikini is that everyone, Star Wars fan or not, knows what it is. It has become a pop culture mainstay. The leather-metal-cloth-chain ensemble has appeared at the Smithsonian and on sitcoms. It has been on action figures, limited-edition dolls for girls, and is available as a popular Halloween costume (88% polyester and 12% spandex) selling for around 50 bucks. The creepy, papery Jabba is only available separately. It is 30 years later and we are still obsessed with this costume, or lack thereof. Why? When we first saw Leia in that outfit, it…

The Sith lord and his director. In March 2007 I had the great fortune to interview the producer of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Rick McCallum, for my website Lightsabre (which merged with Jedi News back in 2010). After the conclusion of a fascinating interview I mentioned to Rick that I had been attempting to contact director Irvin Kershner, but to little success. Very kindly, Rick offered to put me and Kershner in touch, and so a month later I found myself talking to the director of what is — in my opinion — the greatest movie ever made, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire…

Toronto Fan Expo was August 28-31. Said to be the third largest pop culture convention in North America, the show packs the Metro Toronto Convention Center wall-to-wall with fans. Disney Canada and Lucasfilm presented a Star Wars Rebels booth on the show floor, and the highlight of the weekend: a screening of Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion on Friday. This was only the second public screening of the movie, the first being at San Diego Comic-Con International. Nothing confirmed (as usual), but this article made me go slightly nuts so I’ll post it: Is this what Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Character looks like? Here be one of the sketches: It is supposed concept art for supposedly Daisy Ridley’s character and, well, “it shows off a much more practical, rugged costume design that’s more in line with Star Wars’ original trilogy.” I posted this sketch because it also resembles the utilitarian scout outfit and functional pulled-back hairstyle of Jan Ors from the Dark Forces video games: Which in turn was, I believe,…

As a refresher, we knew from earlier videos and various picture leaks that there will be (larger than) life size, physical models and will include at least one X-wing. Hopefully we will find out how many … but I wonder, does Luke own the last one? Did he fix up his old one or buy a new model? Were all the old ones destroyed?! Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams tweeted…
