Our Star Wars Weekends event for 2015 is well under way and better than ever! And this week, the incomparable Warwick Davis is among the celebrity guests visiting from that galaxy far, far away. Warwick portrayed lovable Ewok Wicket from the forest moon of Endor and has brought to vivid life several beloved characters beyond the worlds of Star Wars. In fact, one of my favorite shows during Star Wars Weekends is “An Ewok’s Tale: My Short Story,” Warwick Davis’s hysterical one-man show through which he shares his adventures as only he can. It’s definitely not to be missed! Of course,…
  • From World War to Star Wars: May the 4th

    Cole Horton
    21 May 2015 | 10:22 am
May 4 — known colloquailly as Star Wars Day — is practically a holiday for Star Wars fans. We celebrate with movie marathons, special announcements, merchandise sales, and more. Yet as a historian, I think of May 4 for some very different reasons — as a day that marked some important milestones during the Second World War. While many remember the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 as the start of the war for the United States, many forget how tenuous the conflict was for America and the Allied Powers in the months after the attack. The Allies were on the defensive…

    20 May 2015 | 3:54 pm
The arrival of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace ushered in a new era. Fans were transported into the past to view not only the fall of Anakin Skywalker, but the descent of the Republic and the Jedi Order. We saw how the Emperor took control and how the Galactic Empire began. It was a bleak time for the galaxy — a time made worse by the dark side clouding the Force and blinding those who had the potential to change the course. Because the 16th anniversary of the release of The Phantom Menace and the 10th anniversary of the release Revenge of the Sith just passed (both films hit theaters on…

Before I get into the (not so new anymore) news, I want to address my fellow EU/Legends fans: I’m a bit sad about certain parts of my beloved Expanded Universe going from canon to “Legends” and having a completely new storyline written, yes, but I still think it makes a weird sort of sense. I hope people like me may find some comfort in what Han Solo said to Z. Ghent in Heir to the Empire: “Just remember that whatever you’ve heard has been hearsay. And that hearsay stories grow an extra leg every time they’re told.” Heir to the Empire has become one…

There’s no easy way to put it: there will be at least TWENTY new Star Wars books released this year before the December 18 premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The book series is officially called “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens“. Some will retell the events…

Happy New Year! The biggest The Force Awakens news of December was the announcement by Entertainment Weekly of several character names using the style of vintage trading cards: Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn, Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron, soccer ball droid’s BB-8, and whoever the heck’s Kylo Ren. Also confirmed is that this “Kylo Ren” is a male, and that the remaining ships and characters we saw are indeed “stormtroopers,” the Millennium Falcon, and so forth. Conspicuously not confirmed is Rey’s surname and parentage (is she a…

I was watching Episode IV: A New Hope one night during my last winter break of college, right before I was about to head back for my final semester before graduation. Something about that line and that moment hit me. I paused the movie and just put in my school name to replace Mos Eisley spaceport. • Postcards from Naboo (Updated)

    13 May 2015 | 5:00 am
Nine years ago SWNZ posted an article and photo gallery from Villa Balbianello, the Italian location where a number of 'Attack of the Clones' scenes were filmed. The average computer screen resolution has come along way in the past decade, so it was time to go back to the original photos and update that popular article with higher-resolution pictures... A significant part of the impact of the Star Wars movies stems from a deliberate attention to detail. This is reflected in the appearance of props, costumes, sets and locations. A diverse multitude of planets are represented across the six…

Want your own Death Star? First, find an old egg box... The first Star Wars budget was so tiny Darth Vader's costume was a blanket and the spaceships were cardboard On the whole, it is difficult to conjure up a mental picture of the statistics involved with anything that has to do with Star Wars. What may have begun as a simple science-fiction movie filled with 'adventure, thrills, good versus bad' quickly evolved into 'a grand, galaxy-spanning mythological epic', according to Chris Taylor in this definitively nerdy compendium of facts and figures.

We have nothing to fear from your pitiful little strike force. An entire legion of my best pins awaits them. Disney’s purchase of Star Wars brought immediate merchandising returns. Hell, when I went in 2012 before the announcement, the parks were already crowded with Mickey Skywalker, Minnie Leia and Darth Pete merch. That’s an incestuous undertone they probably didn’t mean to add to that relationship… Yes, that is a quote from TESB. Which brings us to this bowling set from Star Tours, the first chink in Lucasfilm’s armor through which Disney infected it.
