  • How to Make a (Concrete) Death Star

    Mark Rogero
    19 Dec 2014 | 9:29 am
When I was a kid watching Star Wars for the first time, like so many others I was awed by the scope and scale of the planets and technology in that galaxy far, far away. The worlds were both primal and futuristic, and I was instantly fascinated. I’ll never forget my awe at the scene of the Millennium Falcon getting caught in the Death Star’s tractor beam and the sense of scale the visuals accomplished when the ship gets pulled into the massive battle station’s docking bay. As a kid intrigued by the structure of things, I was blown away. Now, after training as an architect…

There are many wonderful stories that encapsulate the Christmas spirit, and emphasize the potential for human goodness and decency. These stories are time-honored traditions in the month of December, and I’m sure many of you have favorites that are sacrosanct for you and your families.  Perhaps there has not been a more retold Christmas story than the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, featuring the curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge. Upon recently teaching this class to my freshmen students, I was struck by the similarities between Scrooge and the correspondingly conflicted Darth…

When December rolls around each year, I look at my holiday decorations to see what I can apply a Star Wars makeover to. It seems like there’s an endless number of crafts to make such as stockings, tree skirts, and ornaments. This year I turned my eye to snow globes. I’ve put a tauntaun in a jar of fake snow, but I’ve never taken the next step and added water. I learned that snow globes are surprisingly simple to make, and I want to make one for every shelf in my home. I started with a Hoth snow globe because of obvious reasons and because it’s one of my favorite…

You can get official news from the official site and twitter feed and see the trailer there or anywhere, so I wanted to wait until a nice amount of commentary showed up on the crazy Internet. There will be spoilers (nothing too major, I hope) pictures, GIFS, and embeddings of teasers real and fake, so don’t click that link if you have a slow connection (like me!) or want to avoid spoilers. Otherwise, plenty follows! There are plenty of fakes around, so below is the REAL teaser: You can definitely see the influence of McQuarrie’s original concept art for X-wings and TIE fighters:…

With principal photography having been finished up in London, the title was announced by Lucasfilm through Twitter and I agree with Screencrush, the best time to do this was just some random day, when I’m at work being busy and I get a breaking news e-mail from the fiancé. The title will here henceforth be known as TFA, or, Texas Faculty Association (you’re welcome — or sorry? — for the two or three strange website hits, Texas). Here is Screencrush’s report (includes possible plot SPOILERS). And some more of the usual amusing commentary and news from The…

Seen at the 2014 Auckland Armageddon Expo, the 3.6m long, 2.4m high AT-AT child's bed made by Philip Magnussen of Katikati-based Paranooid Productions Ltd had exactly this kind of impact. I believe the correct response to such an encounter is to forget that the intended primary audience might be the youngling fans, and remember that when it comes to the appreciation of things Star Wars, the distinction between generations is blurred to the point of nonexistence...just admit that you really want…

Previously I mentioned I had been working on a 2D RPG project in the Mass Effect Universe. So, instead of that I have been working on a Star Wars one just for kicks. Why? Well, with that property it is a lot more popular than Mass Effect and the Star Wars universe is much more fleshed out story wise, which means I wouldn’t have to figure all that out allowing me to just work on the sprites/graphics/code such as the walkabout…
