Being a Star Wars fan growing up in the UK during the ’80s was a unique experience. Sure, like our fellow fans across the globe we had the films, the action figures, the books, and the food promotions, but we also had access to a number of things that fans around the world didn’t. We got the chance to watch Admiral Ozzel wear a wonky wig on BBC kids show Grange Hill. We saw Gold 2 play a role in popular early evening soap Crossroads. We even saw Darth Vader showing kids how to cross the road safely dressed in tight green spandex. But the one thing that really set us apart from our…

  • Studying Skywalkers: (Figuratively) Exploring the Dagobah Cave

    Dan Zehr
    22 Oct 2014 | 3:39 pm
From the moment Luke Skywalker enters the Dagobah cave, a sense of tension, not unlike something out of a horror films, grabs hold. This pivotal scene encapsulates some strong metaphors that are prevalent in the study of literature, and helps us to learn more about the young hero through this important phase in his burgeoning Jedi career. The use of the cave as a metaphor has long been a powerful symbol of what lies beneath the surface, and has impacted storytelling for generations. The motif of the cave is as old as Homer’s Odyssey, as Odysseus finds himself trapped with the beautiful…

Here be one of the sketches: It is supposed concept art for supposedly Daisy Ridley’s character and, well, “it shows off a much more practical, rugged costume design that’s more in line with Star Wars’ original trilogy.” I posted this sketch because it also resembles the utilitarian scout outfit and functional pulled-back hairstyle of Jan Ors from the Dark Forces video games: Which in turn was, I believe,…

    8 Aug 2014 | 5:00 am
This year's Comic-Con International: San Diego saw a lot of buzz around Hot Wheels's new range of Star Wars-inspired cars. Sadly, its upcoming line of miniature Star Wars vehicles - one of the releases I was most excited about at SDCC - received far less coverage. The internet is a wonderful place however, and thanks to the fine folks at GalacticHunter.com we're now able to get our first look at this exciting new line (gallery link). The vehicles aren't set to ship until Spring 2015, so the range on display at SDCC was understandably limited. Among those vehicles featured were a handful of…
  • A New Hope for Star Wars Vehicle Collectors

Last month, we received word that Hot Wheels and Star Wars would soon be joining forces to release an entirely new range of vehicles. One line will include themed "character cars" (the first of which - Darth Vader - can be seen here). The second - and perhaps more interesting - line, will contain a series of distinct miniature ships with display stands. As far as I'm concerned, this is fantastic news. While the characters of Star Wars are incredibly important, the vehicles of the saga have a special place in the hearts of fans and collectors alike. In the mid- to late-90s there were…

First up I’m a fan of Thrawn, and all the stories about him from Outbound to The Last Command. Zahn came up with a kick-ass character, and it’s worth reading on more than once occasion. He’d certainly fit the mould for a villain in the Rebels period, whether in a novel or in the show as just a one or two episode arc. I wouldn’t make him a big arc at all. Dave Filoni and Zahn both chatted in the middle of the Clone Wars run on doing something with the character, and having him be a thorn in the side of Admiral Yularen and the others as they battled Grievous and Dooku in…
